LONG BEACH — The Glendora girls flag football team hauled in five interceptions in the second half, including a pick six by senior linebacker Maddie Finkbiner, to secure a 19-0 victory against Long Beach Poly in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs Tuesday.
“I definitely think it brought a new revived energy that we definitely needed,” Finkbiner said. “I will say the team makes me look really good. Hermann had an incredible tip that set me up really well, and I’m glad they told me to keep running because I thought my flag was gone so it was a real special treat.”
Glendora improved to 13-8 overall and will play at La Serna in the Division 3 semifinals Saturday.
The Tartans’ postseason run comes after they received an at-large playoff berth despite a 1-5 record and last-place finish in the Palomares League.
“It’s an awesome feeling,” Glendora coach Greg Bidolli said. “We’re playing well at the right time, which you can’t always do. You can’t always predict that.”
Long Beach Poly dropped to 14-12.
The Jackrabbits’ offense never got into the red zone as junior quarterback Brooklyn Richardson threw three interceptions and reserve junior quarterback Makayla Lumpkin threw two interceptions.
“That’s a big difference, us throwing interception, not reading the defense, not getting the ball away quickly,” Long Beach Poly coach Rob Shock said. “Earlier in the first half, we had a lot of drops. Second half we started to hold on to the ball a little longer, trying to make big plays, instead of taking what they were giving us.”
Finkbiner’s 43-yard interception return for a touchdown put the Tartans up 7-0 with 10:06 left in the third quarter.
Finkbiner’s second interception stopped Poly’s offense just outside the red zone at the 25 with 7:57 left in the third.
“It’s truly just such an honor,” Finkbiner continued. “This has been such an incredible season full of so many highs and lows, but we’ve really picked each other up and learned from all of our mistakes and just grown together as such an incredible team. I have so much faith in our program going into the next couple of years and it’s such an honor to be a part of.”
A 35-yard catch by Glendora sophomore receiver Mayo Ixco got the Tartans down to the Poly 3. After being backed up by a Jackrabbits sack, sophomore quarterback Rylee Franks’ 3-yard touchdown pass to Ixco put Glendora up 13-0 with 4:58 left in the third.
Poly was led by senior receiver/linebacker Ki’ele Ho-Ching, who had an 18-yard catch early in the second half. Ho-Ching, an Oklahoma softball commit, was injured late in the third quarter while tackling Glendora senior defensive back Olivia Martin after an interception.
“She’s an impact player,” Shock said. “That young lady can change the game with one play, offensively and defensively.”
Glendora went up 19-0 on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Franks to senior receiver Ronnie Hermann with 2:29 left in the third.
Hermann, who also plays linebacker, put an exclamation mark on the defensive shutout with two interceptions in the final 13 minutes to secure the 19-0 victory.
