The 2026 Garden Fest was held at Bakersfield College on April 18– where creativity, nature, and community all came together in one place. The event was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. where throughout the day all agriculture departments of BC had the opportunity to showcase their produce and student talents. A special addition to the event was the participation of BC’s Culinary Arts students that led a cook-off exhibiting their culinary skills.
The annual fundraiser was the perfect occasion for Bakersfield’s agricultural circle to get together and share tips, crafts, and produce. While there was a wide variety of booths, hobbies, and lots of student involvement– it gave Kern County locals the opportunity to walk around, talk, and take a break from their usual routine.
It was clear a nice springtime event was much needed in Bakersfield after speaking to a few attendees. For instance, Glen Lagerstrom from the Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning said, “It brings out the community.” Lagerstrom went on to say how one of the things the Levan Institute appreciates most about Bakersfield College is how it sponsors things that encourage individuals to get out of their homes, enjoy sunny days, and connect with others.
Stacey Jischke, BC Agriculture Technician explained that the edible and ornamental plants and seeds sold by the Horticulture Program have been grown and harvested by their very own students. “Garden Fest is beneficial to our community because it showcases the many programs we offer on campus, as well as the talents of our students, student organizations, and local vendors,” said Jischke.
There were dozens of families, couples, and friend groups enjoying the weather, while also learning more about horticulture. With food trucks and shopping opportunities, the event was a nice alternative to your typical Saturday morning pastimes, with the educational aspect. Garden Fest brought more life to campus that went far beyond the flowers showcased that day.
