A weekend stop at a Long Beach liquor store turned into a $1 million surprise for Bernardo Escobedo, a California Lottery player who recently won the top prize on a Money Mania Scratchers ticket.
Escobedo said he typically buys a single ticket whenever he visits a liquor store, often choosing locations at random.
This time, luck found him at LB City Market, located at Orange Avenue and 10th Street, where he won the $1 million prize.

“When I realized I had won, I was outside the store where I bought the ticket,” Escobedo told the California Lottery. “Winning that kind of money from a $10 ticket is unbelievable. I went back inside and scanned it again because I still couldn’t believe it.”
Escobedo, a longtime Lottery player, said his previous wins were modest, usually between $100 and $500. He said he’s letting God decide what happens next.
Escobedo wasn’t the only winner; the California Lottery said two other players also claimed $1 million prizes:
Cynthia Bravo purchased a winning ticket at a Chevron station on Norwood Avenue in Sacramento.
Metta Barone purchased a winning ticket at a Safeway on Granite Drive in Rocklin.

The Lottery says every ticket sold helps support public education across California.
Created by voters through Proposition 37 in 1984, the Lottery launched its first Scratchers game the following year. By law, lottery contributions help support public schools statewide.
