A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday to mark the start of major improvements at Long Beach Airport, backed by more than $24 million in federal funding secured through the Federal Aviation Administration.

U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., joined city officials and airport leadership at the event, signaling the start of a project to expand key parts of the terminal and enhance the passenger experience.

“As the former mayor of Long Beach, I know firsthand how important our airport is to the city and our local economy,” Garcia said. “This federal investment is going to make our world-class airport even better.”

The overall project is estimated to cost $37 million and is expected to generate nearly 200 local construction jobs. Officials said the improvements are scheduled to be completed ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“These funds will deliver critical upgrades, support local jobs, and create a better experience for every traveler passing through. Long Beach Airport is one of the best in the country, and we’re making sure it stays that way,” said Garcia.

Planned upgrades include remodeling gate areas and restrooms, adding more seating and charging stations, creating new garden spaces, and improving lighting and wayfinding throughout the terminal.

Garcia, the senior Democrat on the House Aviation Subcommittee, helped secure the federal funding through the FAA. He has also advocated for broader transportation infrastructure investments across the region, including funding for transit projects and rail yard expansions tied to the Port of Long Beach.

The airport project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize transportation systems in the Los Angeles region in preparation for the 2028 Olympics.
