OAKLAND — A 36-year-old man was charged charged in Alameda County with taking $300 to $400 during an April 20 bank robbery, authorities announced Friday.
Matthew Harris, of Oakland, allegedly confessed in full to the Wells Fargo bank robbery, expressing remorse and blaming his addiction to fentanyl, authorities said. He was arrested Thursday at a transitional housing hotel where he lives, according to court records.
In 2023, Harris spoke with KTVU about his life for a piece about the transitional housing program, talking frankly about his history with heroin addiction and how the opportunity for housing has been a life changer.
“I might be in jail, or prison maybe. If I wasn’t locked up, I would probably be in Berkeley dodging the cops, you know, all that stuff,” he told KTVU.
Harris is being held at Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail and is set to be arraigned on Monday, authorities said.
