A San Jose neighborhood is on edge after a man carrying a large machete was caught on surveillance video jumping a fence and wandering around a driveway.

The incident was reported Friday morning on Herald Avenue, east of downtown and near the Interstate 680 and Highway 101 interchange.

“It was pretty scary, especially when I saw that machete in his hand,” homeowner Jose Arteaga said. “It was pretty scary.”

Arteaga said the incident happened just before 6 a.m. and initially though it was an Amazon employee making noise as they delivered a package. But when he checked his surveillance video a half hour later, Arteaga saw a much different scene.

Arteaga called police and officers arrived about an hour later for an unrelated call. The homeowner said an officer looked around, but did not file a report.

San Jose police told NBC Bay Area they have few details on the incident. Arteaga said he also provided the surveillance video to police. No injuries were reported.

Arteaga said he will now be more vigilant all hours of the day and night because the man is still out there. He notes that behind his yard is an empty lot frequented by transients.
