Re “Balboa Park groups see drop in visitors” (April 21): Mayor Todd Gloria is clearly not concerned about the sharp decline in park visitors and the resulting threat to the park’s future. His overriding interest in our “crown jewel” seems to be how much money he can wring out of it.
And his exculpatory claim that parking fee revenues benefit the park raises doubts. We need verifiable proof. How much of that money actually goes to the park? Does it go directly to the park as over-and-above support? Or does it go into the general fund where it replaces the current meagre park allotment and frees up that money for other uses?
City Hall has two choices. Give us a full accounting of exactly how Balboa Park parking fee revenues are spent. Or stop the spin doctoring that disrespects us and makes us even angrier.
