‘Then, Now, Becoming’
Rasika Kumar, principal artist and choreographer for Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose, will perform a new solo work, “Trikaala – Then, Now, Becoming,” on Saturday, May 9, 4 p.m. at the Cubberley Theatre, 4120 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto.
Kumar learned Bharatanatyam—South Indian classical dance—from her mother Mythili Kumar, Abhinaya’s artistic director.
“Bharatanatyam is a living form capable of holding contemporary experience,” she said in a release. “As I begin teaching my own children, the question of lineage and inheritance come into sharp focus for me. This work asks how these inherited images and myths can be made alive again through personal connection, for ourselves and the next generation.”

WILLOW GLEN>>The San José Chamber Orchestra presents “Concerto Night” May 17 at St. Francis Episcopal Church, featuring cellist Christopher Costanza. Costanza is the associate director of music for Stanford Medical Humanities and Art and a recipient of a Solo Recitalists Grant from National Endowment for the Arts; he’ll perform Saint-Såens Cello Concert no. 1, conducted by Anthony Quartuccio.
The program also includes Anton Arensky’s “Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, Op. 35a” and “Rounds for String Orchestra (1944)” by David Diamond.
