St. Anthony High, Long Beach’s private Catholic school, recently marked its 105th anniversary and celebrated the return of its Hall of Fame event by inducting six community leaders whose contributions have made a lasting impact on the campus and greater community.
From its earliest classes to the students of today, generations of Saints have carried forward a shared mission of living lives rooted in faith and dedicated to serving others, school officials said. The 105th anniversary gala celebrated that legacy and a commitment to the future of Catholic education at St. Anthony.
The celebration, held on Saturday, April 25, brought together alumni, families, civic leaders, philanthropic partners and community members for fellowship and a dinner, and to celebrate the inductees.
The gala, themed “One Mission. A Century of Impact,” marked the first Hall of Fame gathering in a decade, originally envisioned for 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic intervened, officials said. Established in 1985, the Hall of Fame honors exceptional Saints for their achievements in life, as well as contributions to the school, church and community.
“Some moments are worth the wait,” St. Anthony High School President Christine Tucker said in a statement ahead of the event. “Tonight, we finally come together with full hearts, 105 years of mission behind us, and a community more united than ever. Our honorees embody what Catholic education at its best looks like – a lifelong commitment to faith, service and leaving things better than you found them.”

The new members inducted into the St. Anthony High School Hall of Fame were Nicholas Andrade, Joseph Banfield, Gina Rushing Maguire, Tom and Christine “Kiki” Miller, Father Al Scott, and the Rudy J. and Daphne A. Munzer Foundation.
Andrade, from the class of 1963, is a community builder, entrepreneur and advocate, according to a biography provided by St. Anthony. Andrade transferred to St. Anthony as a junior, working as a janitor, driver and rectory assistant, all while running cross country and track. His impressive half-mile time earned him a spot on the all-Catholic squad and a scholarship to UCLA. Andrade built a successful career in the bicycle industry, pioneering sales markets in Japan and Taiwan, and receiving the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association lifetime achievement award.
He credited St. Anthony for instilling the work ethic and discipline that fueled his achievements. Now Andrade is active in his community, volunteering at Holy Trinity and St. Matthew’s Catholic churches and at a San Pedro food bank.
Banfield is a retired faculty member, and an attorney, educator and community supporter. After starting in aerospace, he became a teacher. For 20 years, Banfield taught U.S. history, religion and criminal law at St. Anthony, and also served as an academic adviser. Even in retirement, he mentors the school’s mock trial team and supports students. He was annually chosen by seniors for the capping ceremony in recognition of his impact.
Honored as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction and recipient of the Archdiocesan Christian Service Award, he has also served 20 years as a parish education director and scoutmaster.
Rushing Maguire is on the Long Beach Utilities Commission, past president of St. Anthony and a member of the class of 1967. After graduating from Cal State Long Beach, she began a career in public relations, founding RHR Associates in 1992. In 2001, she became St. Anthony High School’s first president, leading its transformation and raising more than $75 million during her 20-year tenure. Rushing Maguire’s leadership helped save and revitalize the school, making it a national turnaround model.
She has also been a tireless community leader, founding Leadership Long Beach and receiving numerous awards, including the Key to the City of Long Beach.
Tom and Christine Miller met at St. Anthony and both graduated in 1966. Tom Miller went on to become a distinguished construction defect attorney, earning national recognition and numerous awards, including Super Lawyer and the National Litigator Award. He has authored four treatises on construction law. Christine Miller has been the heart of their family, managing properties in San Francisco, Baja California and Costalegre, and is known for her optimism and people skills.
The Millers have made substantial philanthropic contributions, including to the St. Anthony High School Athletic Complex. The couple credited St. Anthony for the core values that shaped their success.
Scott is part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and a retired Catholic educator, and continues to be a community advocate and volunteer. For nine years at St. Anthony, Scott helped enrich students’ lives beyond the classroom, organizing theater trips, bringing in guest speakers like Holocaust survivors, and taking students to Skid Row to encourage empathy and real-world engagement. Scott continues to mentor men in recovery and brings St. Anthony students to visit local nursing homes. He founded Father Al’s Outreach Inc., a nonprofit supporting the poor, homeless and recovering addicts.
At 93, he remains active, celebrating Mass at two churches and working out at the YMCA. He was honored as a distinguished St. John’s Seminary alumnus in 2024.
The Munzer Foundation is rooted in values of service, education, faith and community. Their philanthropy has helped Long Beach institutions, supporting organizations like St. Anthony High School, MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach. The Munzer Foundation’s support for St. Anthony High spans decades, including tuition assistance, music and science program support, campus renovations, and major capital projects. Since 2019, the foundation has awarded the school nearly $867,000, ensuring access to a Catholic college-preparatory education for students in need.
“Our Hall of Fame honorees represent the very best of what it means to be a Saint,” Adan Jaramillo, St. Anthony High School principal, said in a statement. “Their generosity and leadership reflect the balanced, community-forward values this school has cultivated for more than a century and a reminder that the next century of impact is already underway.”
