A man who was allegedly brandishing a firearm on Auseon Avenue in East Oakland was shot and killed by Oakland police officers Monday afternoon, according to OPD.
In a press release, the department said it received several 911 calls around 4 p.m. from residents who said a man was pointing a firearm at people.
Officers located the suspect on the 1900 block of Auseon Avenue, a residential street filled with modest, single-family homes. According to OPD, the man pointed his gun at officers. The officers requested backup.
The suspect then “moved to a yard in the 1800 block of 89th Avenue, where he again pointed the firearm at officers,” according to OPD. “Officers then fired at him.”
The department says its officers provided the man with first aid, and he was transported to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.
OPD did not say how many officers fired their guns during the incident.
The Oaklandside is unable to verify some of OPD’s statements about the incident timeline because the department encrypted its radios last year, eliminating the pubic’s ability to listen in on police communications.
Police have not identified the deceased man but said they recovered a firearm.
The last shooting involving OPD officers was in February 2025, when residents on 92nd Avenue called to report a man who also was pointing a gun at people. Officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, but no one was wounded.
