A 38-year-old man died Wednesday after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run collision two days prior while riding his bike in East Oakland, officials said.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Bartholomew Fitzgerald Drawsand, an Oakland resident.
The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday on a residential street in Oakland’s Highland Terrace neighborhood, according to the Oakland Police Department.
Police said Drawsand was riding his bike west on East 22nd Street before turning north onto 23rd Avenue. The driver was going south on 23rd Avenue when he or she struck the bicyclist, then fled the scene.
Paramedics transported Drawsand to a hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries Wednesday morning, police said.
Previous media coverage indicates that Drawsand was an Oakland native who had long been homeless, living at the East 12th Street encampment for many years before it was cleared last year.
Investigators said it was not clear if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
Police provided no information about the driver or suspect vehicle, and the investigation remains ongoing.
