Two of last season’s top senior baseball players are picking up right where they left off.

Carlsbad High School grad Jett Kenady has started all 43 games at shortstop for Cal (23-20) and is hitting .337 with eight homers, 16 doubles and 28 RBIs.

And Granite Hills product Trevor Smith has played in 34 games for Washington State (23-21), hitting .289 with a pair of homers, 10 doubles and three triples.

Both play center fied for their respective teams.

More baseball

Washington State also features redshirt freshman Matt Priest, a La Jolla Country Day grad who transferred to Pullman from USC. Priest is hitting .348 with four homers and 26 RBIs.

• Frankie Carney (St. Augustine) leads UC Irvine with a .301 average. Peyton Rodgers (La Costa Canyon), a transfer from San Diego State, is 1-1 with three saves in 16 appearances. Tyler Foster (Carlsbad) is 1-1 in 13 appearances. In 28 innings, he has walked four and struck out 25.

• Jacob May (Eastlake) is hitting .319 at Cal State Bakersfield with four homers, nine doubles, five triples, nine steals and 24 RBIs.

• Alex Fernandes (San Marcos) is having a huge senior season at San Jose State, leading the Spartans with a .399 average. He has six homers, 14 doubles and 35 RBIs.

• Joey Iglesis (Madison) has pitched in 16 games for Long Beach State, striking out 23 in 24 innings. He’s carrying a 4.81 ERA.

• Jack Sanders (Poway/Palomar College) is having a big senior season at Cal Poly Pomona, hitting .331 with a team-leading 13 homers, 12 doubles, 49 RBIs and 16 steals.

Del Norte trio shines

Former Del Norte pitchers Aiden Kuei and Grey Gusich and outfielder Kyle Becker are all playing well in college. Becker is hitting. 369 with five homers, 13 doubles and 29 RBIs at Northwest Nazarene.

Gusich is 5-2 with a conference-leading 1.88 ERA at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix. He threw an eight-inning no-hitter against Gateway Community College on April 8.

Kuei is 6-6 with a 4.55 ERA and a conference-leading 86 strikeouts. He threw a no-hitter against California Miramar University, striking out 11.

Softball

Outfielder Kyra Chan (Torrey Pines) and catcher Ava Gall (El Capitan) have helped lead Stanford to a No. 18 ranking and a 34-12 record. After sweeping rival Cal, Chan is hitting .396 with five home runs, 12 doubles, five triples and 32 RBIs. She has struck out just 10 times in 132 plate appearances. Gall, a catcher, is hitting .357 with four homers and 27 RBIs. She has 125 plate appearances with only eight strikeouts.

• Sophomore infielder Sereniti Trice (Cathedral Catholic), a transfer from Iowa State, is hitting .426 with a homer, seven doubles and 26 RBIs for No. 19 Arizona (34-13). Sina Talataina (Cathedral Catholic), a freshman infielder, has played in 16 games for the Wildcats.

• Nataly Lozano (Otay Ranch) is hitting .418 with eight homers and 30 RBIs for Cal State Fullerton (35-12). Pitcher Leanna Garcia (Mission Hills) is 6-0 with five saves and a 3.18 ERA in 23 appearances. Freshman pitcher Hana Winton (Fallbrook) has appeared in five games.

Beach volleyball

The NCAA Tournament starts this weekend in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Here are the locals involved in the event:

• Ensley Alden (San Marcos) is 28-4 for No. 3-seeded UCLA (36-6). Adelina Okazaki (Point Loma) is 13-3. The Bruins open play vs. Tulane.

• Alana Embry (Poway), a transfer from Hawaii, is 14-10 for No. 4-seeded USC. The Trojans open with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

• Julia Westby (Classical Academy), a transfer from Long Beach State, is 28-5 for sixth-seeded Cal Poly, which opens play against Grand Canyon.

• Long Beach State, seeded No. 9, is loaded with local players. The duo of Malia Gementera (Eastlake) and Taylor Hagenah (Mission Vista) is 22-10. Kiara Edwards (Torrey Pines), a transfer from San Jose State, is 19-13. Kealoha Phillips (Victory Christian) is 13-15. Long Beach State opens against Cal.

Men’s volleyball

USC, led by Parker Tomkinson (Carlsbad), Wesley Smith (La Costa Canyon) and Christian Connell (Torrey Pines), opens play in this weekend’s NCAA Tournament against Belmont Abbey. The 7-foot Tomkinson has 107 kills and leads the Trojans with 84 blocks. The 6-11 Smith has 128 kills and is second on the team with 81 blocks. Connell has 59 kills.

• Evan Erickson (Westview) had 143 kills and 37 blocks for UC Santa Cruz.

• Mathias Durfee (Canyon Crest Academy) had 105 kills and 22 blocks for Menlo.

Women’s lacrosse

Laurel Gonzalez (Torrey Pines) has started all 18 matches for Johns Hopkins (18-8), which awaits word on an NCAA Tournament berth. The Union-Tribune’s 2023-24 Girls Athlete of the Year has eight goals and a pair of assists.

• Natalie Marvin (Bishop’s) played in 14 matches for Harvard (6-9). scoring nine goals and adding two assists.

Men’s lacrosse

Brett Koopman (Santa Fe Christian) has played in all 14 matches for North Carolina (11-3), which plays Syracuse in the ACC Tournament. Tayden Bultman (Torrey Pines) has played in five matches.

• Beck Mahoney (Cathedral Catholic) has played in 10 matches for Cornell (10-3), which opens Ivy League Tournament play against Harvard.

•  Ben Trask (Torrey Pines) has played in all 13 matches for Utah (9-4), who opens play against Air Force in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.

Transfer news

Ice Brady (Cathedral Catholic), who will graduate from UConn with a degree in communications, has transferred to Florida State. The 6-3 Brady will sit out the 2026-27 season after undergoing knee surgery.

• Mikey Williams (San Ysidro) has entered the transfer portal. He averaged 17.1 points and 4.5 assists at Sacramento State, his third college stop after signing with Memphis and playing at Central Florida.
