Bakersfield, Calif. (KBAK/FOX58) — The Kern County Animal Services is asking residents to help clear the shelter through their “Just 1 Dog” initiative.

The event will take place on May 9th, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their location at 3951 Fruitvale Avenue.

According to KCAS, there is an estimated population of 927,00 people, and if 1% of that population committed to fostering or adopting a dog, the shelter would be empty.

The shelter lists three ways to help: by adopting, fostering, or rescuing an animal.

During the event, all adoption fees are waived for dogs and cats.

In a statement, Nick Cullen, the Director of Animal Services, said…

When we think about how challenging the last 4 years have been, it’s hard to imagine an animal shelter in Kern County being empty. But if less than one tenth of one percent of the people that live in Kern County made a decision to adopt or foster just one dog on Saturday May 9th, we won’t have to imagine an empty shelter, because it will be a reality,
