Lucas Giolito struck out six over 4⅓ innings in his second start with low Single-A Lake Elsinore in a 9-3 win over Ontario on Thursday.
The veteran right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and a walk. He threw 43 of his 70 pitches for strikes.
The Padres have until May 16 to add Giolito to the active roster.
Right-hander Bryan Balzer (3-0, 3.68 ERA) closed the game with six strikeouts over four shutout innings in which he allowed one just hit and hit a batter.
First baseman Luke Cantwell (.853 OPS) drove in three runs on his first homer.
Catcher Truitt Madonna (.743 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits, including a double. Right fielder George Bilecki (.700 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits.
Lake Elsinore is 14-10.
