A 41-year-old Harbor City man was charged this week with murder for the fatal shooting of a man in Belmont Shore following a dispute in a bar over the weekend, authorities said.
Jason Lamar Loving was charged Tuesday, Oct. 28, of murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and violating a criminal protective or restraining order, court records show.
Loving was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting 32-year-old Jeremy Anthony Spears, police said.
Earlier, an altercation erupted at a local bar and continued outside in the 100 block of La Verne Avenue. Loving is accused of pulling a handgun and firing and fleeing in a vehicle with a woman.
Spears died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a medical examiner’s report.
The shooting “has once again drawn attention to the late-night environment in Belmont Shore,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said while citing safety concerns tied to some establishments.
In 2024, there were two homicides along Second Street.
Dasmine Hall, 31, of Compton was also arrested after she was seen fleeing with Loving, but she was not charged due to insufficient evidence, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.
Court documents obtained by the Southern California News Group show that Hall was the protected party in an unrelated case where Loving was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from her and her home, workplace and vehicle through Jan. 16, 2028.
What happened inside the bar prompting the altercation was unclear.
