Cathedral Catholic has reached the CIF San Diego section boys team tennis finals six times since 2008 and have not been able to get over the mountaintop.

However, three years after falling in the Division 1 finals that came down to total points won, the top-seeded Dons defeated No. 3 Francis Parker 12-6 to win the Division 1 title Saturday at the Barnes Tennis Center.

“It’s a tremendous accomplishment,” Dons coach Joe Barbaraie said. “It’s amazing.”

The Dons won seven of nine doubles matches, including Gavin Gerken and Maverik Denton winning all three of their matches.

In addition, the Dons’ doubles teams of Wesley Utz and Nico Moegling and Drew Campbell and Nathan Tran won two of three matches.

“Seeing them put away balls, seeing them work together, cheer for each other, it’s an amazing feeling watching your teammates be as successful as you are,” Moegling said.

In singles, all three Dons —Jacoby Laws, Derrick Li and Marc Calderon — recorded wins in two of three matches.

“We’ve all came as a team, and I think that’s what mattered the most.” Calderon said. “Every match mattered. We all support each other, clap for each other, and that unity brought us together.”

Francis Parker, who made its first section Division 1 final Saturday, was led by Ilias Bouzoubaa, who went 3-0 in singles and did not allow a single point.

Division 2: No. 5 St. Augustine 11, No. 11 Eastlake 7

Like Cathedral Catholic, St. Augustine had never won a sole boys tennis team title.

Saturday at Southwestern College, No. 5 St. Augustine prevailed over No. 11 Eastlake 11-7 to win the Division 2 crown.

“I’m really proud of our players, the way they went through an up and down season and finished on top,” Saints coach Tim Golden said. “It’s really what we hoped for as we went through the season. So, we’re really excited.”

The Saints won 4-2 in the first rotation before being victorious in five of six matches in the second rotation.

That includes Matthew Gosling, Alberto Serrano and Colt Neubrand all winning their first two singles matches. In addition, Galo Villalobos and Alberto Guerrero secured two doubles matches.

“Eastlake always has a good team,” Golden said. “I have great respect for (coach Fernando Mendes) and for their program. We knew we would have to play our best in order to come out on top.”
