A Long Island man has been sentenced to decades behind bars for attacking a former coworker with an ax, authorities announced Friday, May 1.
Anthony Calvo, 35, got 22 years in prison for the attack on a 60-year-old employee of Long Beach Taxi, the Nassau County District Attorney’s office said.
The victim was walking home from an overnight dispatcher shift at the taxi service around 5:50 a.m. on Feb. 13, 2025, according to investigators.
Calvo, an ex-Long Beach Taxi employee, sneaked up behind him with an ax and struck him three times in the head, face, and arm, prosecutors said. He then fled the scene on an electric bike, authorities said.
“Anthony Calvo’s vicious attack last year set Long Beach residents on edge, fearing that an assailant with an ax was threatening their streets,” District Attorney Anne Donnelly said. “Calvo’s attack, however, was targeted, spurred by a workplace dispute that this defendant decided to end with brutal violence.”
The victim made it home and was transported to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries to his head and jaw, according to the district attorney’s office.
Calvo, of Long Beach, was arrested about one month after the attack. He pleaded guilty on Friday, March 20 to second-degree attempted murder.
“Calvo will spend the next two decades in prison, but his ruthless actions condemned an innocent man to round-the-clock medical care and a very long road to recovery,” Donnelly said.
