Locals will be finding new favorite places and foods as they stroll along Garnet Avenue on May 20 during the Coast of PB Restaurant Walk.
The annual self-guided tour that spans Garnet Avenue from Ocean Boulevard to Dawes Street is organized by Discover PB. It will feature over 20 dining establishments and bars offering a wide assortment of dishes and beverages for sampling.
This year, families, college students and tourists can enjoy food and drink from the heart of Pacific Beach from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20. At the event, ticket holders will receive a map that includes all participating businesses.
“I think that what makes this event popular is that, you know, everybody looks forward to trying something new from the restaurants,” said Discover PB Director Sunny Lee.
This is Lee’s fifth year as the business organization’s director and her fifth year helping to organize and facilitate this event alongside the Discover PB team. According to Lee, this event is all about getting exposure for local businesses and making the community aware of what kinds of food and drink they can enjoy in their neighborhood.
Restaurant walk attendees will enjoy a variety of cuisine options, and selected locations will provide drink samples as well.
Among the participating restaurants are bar Ella, Mr. Shawarma Pacific Beach, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, Prince Street Pizza, Duck Dive, The Local Pacific Beach, PB Shore Club, Society PB. Mavericks Beach Club, 710 Beach Club, Pacific Beach Ice Cream Company, Bare Back Grill, Filippi’s Pizza Grotto and Oceana Coastal Kitchen.
This year two new restaurants will also be joining the lineup: Gusto Deli & Bistro. This Italian Bistro opened a new location at 1088 Garnet Ave. last December. Another new business is Seniore’s Pizza at 4305 Mission Blvd.
For businesses new to the area, this event is one way to increase exposure and connect with the community.
“We do have a lot of newer businesses that just opened up (in PB),” Lee said. “So, we were hoping some of those would be on board so that people will get to experience (the restaurant), and then (we can) create the opportunity for people to try it so that they can return if they’ve seen something that they like.”
If purchased in advance at tinyurl.com/CoastofPB26, food-only tickets are $35, while food and drink tickets are $45 for adults 21 and above. One ticket will get participants one sample from each of the 20-plus restaurants at the event.
If purchased on May 20, the price will increase to $40 for food only and $50 for food and drinks.
The event is kid friendly, but there are a few participating businesses that are 21 and over that will not allow kids inside. However, many will also offer items outside.
Event proceeds will go toward supporting the work done throughout the year by Discover PB, which includes many community programs and partnerships.
“The revenue we raise from all of our events goes to all of our programming and part of that is our Clean and Safe Program, which we partner with Shoreline Community Services for,” Lee said. “Some of it goes back into other programming, like workshops for businesses. For example, we’ll be posting a marketing workshop for our businesses in June, and we will have a business breakfast for them.”
Discover PB also works to support local businesses one-on-one, according to Lee. The organization helps to promote businesses and attract more exposure online.
“Our main goal at Discover PB is to help and support our businesses in any way possible,” Lee said. “I always tell people our job is different every day because it might be hosting the workshop, or it might be … connecting one business to another so they can help each other out. It might be offering technical support when somebody is going through a permitting process with the city, or acting as a liaison between the city of San Diego and our businesses.”
