A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after a crash involving a vehicle and a mini bike at an intersection in Fresno.
Fresno police Lt. Zeb Price said the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Shields and West avenues, where the signal lights were flashing red in all directions.
Price said a motorist traveling north on West Avenue stopped at the blinking light on Shields, waited, and then proceeded into the intersection. Simultaneously, the juvenile, riding a gas-powered mini bike east on Shields, entered the intersection and collided with the vehicle.
The impact threw the teen from the mini bike, leaving him with what appeared to be significant injuries.
First responders arrived on the scene and initially believed the teen might have been unconscious.
He was taken to a local hospital, where Price said he is now conscious and communicating with medical staff while they evaluate the extent of his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.
The crash comes just days after a fatal collision in Fresno on Friday, where a 13-year-old was killed and a 12-year-old is in critical condition, prompting renewed concern from police about youth riding e-bikes and mini bikes.
“We love our kids and we want to give our kids things,” Price said. “We want to make sure that when we give them to them, we teach them how to use them safely.)”
Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
