A 14-year-old girl killed Sunday in a crash in the San Carlos neighborhood has been identified as a high school freshman.
Angelina Cielo Santillan Coronel had been a passenger in a sedan that crashed on Navajo Road near Golfcrest Drive just after 11:35 a.m., the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
The teen had been a freshman at Patrick Henry High School, according to a letter the principal sent to the school’s community. The letter said the school would send counselors to each of her classes to share the news in person and “ensure that students receive consistent and accurate information.”
San Diego Unified School District will also send trained counselors, mental health providers, and mental health professionals from the community to support students and staff.
According to San Diego police, Angelina was a passenger in a 2017 Mazda 6 driven by a 35-year-old woman. Police said the sedan was headed west on Navajo when it drove onto the north sidewalk and struck a pedestrian, an 18-year-old man who sustained a concussion and an arm injury.
The car continued moving, police said, heading to the center divide where it struck a tree. Angelina died at the scene.
The driver sustained a fractured ankle, police said. A 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy in the car were not injured in the crash, police said.
Police said one pedestrian had been struck in the crash. The Medical Examiner’s Office said it was told two pedestrians had been struck. No further clarification was immediately available Monday.
