WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Supreme Court ruled to restore broad access to the abortion pill Mifepristone on Monday. The ruling blocks a previous one that threatened to upend a major avenue for abortion that is provided across the country.

The order, signed by Justice Samuel Alito, will temporarily allow abortion seeking women to obtain the pill through the mail or at pharmacies. Neither requires an in-person visit to a doctor.

New restrictions imposed by a federal appeals court, filed last week, aimed to stop these rules that have been in effect for several years.

A majority of abortions that take place in the U.S. are done using medications; often a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol. Since the 2022 Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade, the availability of the drugs has been impacted in most Republican-led states that have banned abortions.

Some Democratic-led states have implemented laws to provide legal protection to those who prescribe the abortion drugs via telehealth to patients from states facing an abortion ban.

The Supreme Court’s order will remain in effect for another week while both sides respond and the issue is fully considered. Mifepristone manufacturers filed emergency appeals asking for the Supreme Court to step in and consider their case.
