SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco-based Uber announced plans Wednesday morning to roll out a fleet of robotaxis in the Bay Area.

It’s part of an agreement with two other Bay Area tech companies: Nuro, a self-driving tech company based in Mountain View, and Lucid, a luxury EV carmaker based in Newark.

Uber says the robotaxis will combine Lucid’s architecture, Nuro’s autonomy system and Uber’s global platform.

Lucid recently delivered test vehicles to Nuro and Uber says it plans to have 100 test vehicles on the road in the coming months. The full program is expected to launch late next year.

San Francisco is going to be the first market where this service is rolled out in.

“The Bay Area has long been the birthplace of transformative technology, and it’s only fitting that Uber’s next-generation robotaxi program with Lucid and Nuro will begin here – launching to the public next year,” Uber’s Chief Product Officer Sachin Kansal said. “By combining deep expertise in electric vehicles, autonomy, and ridehailing, we’re laying the groundwork for safe and scalable autonomous rides in the Bay Area and beyond.”

Within six years, Uber plans to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid-based autonomous taxis in multiple locations. The vehicles will be available to riders through the Uber app.

Uber is working with multiple companies to speed the deployment of autonomous taxis.

On Tuesday, Uber said it’s also developing robotaxis with the tech company Nvidia and the automaker Stellantis. Uber said Tuesday that in 2028, Stellantis expects to start production of at least 5,000 vehicles powered by Nvidia software for autonomous taxi operations in the U.S.
