California drivers could soon get Disneyland-themed license plates that would raise money for children’s hospitals across the state.

State Treasurer Fiona Ma announced Tuesday that her office, Disneyland Resort and the California Children’s Hospital Association are moving forward with plans for a Disneyland-themed specialized license plate.

The plate still needs Department of Motor Vehicles approval and must meet the state’s minimum demand requirement before it can be sold.

Officials said the program needs 7,500 preorders to advance. For now, the California Health Facilities Financing Authority, which is housed in the treasurer’s office and chaired by Ma, has opened an interest list for people who want updates on the design and preorder launch.

“In this time when Californians are struggling to get access to care, we are thrilled to help unlock new funding to help expand care, improve health outcomes, and promote the well-being of children with serious and complex medical needs,” Ma said in a statement.

The proceeds, after administrative costs, would go into a state fund administered by the financing authority and distributed to 13 children’s hospitals in California.

The list includes UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.

Officials said the money would support uncompensated health care services and programs, including personnel, clinical education and patient- and family-centered support services.

“Walt Disney was dedicated to bringing the magic of Disney to children’s hospitals, and we are honored to carry that legacy forward,” Disneyland Resort President Jill Estorino said in a statement.

Standard-issue sequential plates would cost $50, while personalized plates would cost $103, plus a nonrefundable credit card processing fee, according to the treasurer’s office. Annual renewal fees would be $40 for sequential plates and $83 for personalized plates, in addition to standard vehicle registration fees.

The design has not yet been released. State officials said additional announcements are planned as the proposal reaches milestones, including application approval, the design reveal and the preorder campaign.
