Coastal rail service between San Diego and Oceanside will be temporarily suspended later this month for maintenance and major infrastructure work, the North County Transit District said.

The closure is scheduled for the weekend of May 16-17, with regular scheduled service set to resume May 18, according to transit officials.

“Weekend closures occur periodically throughout the year on a pre- determined schedule to provide construction crews the opportunity to work safely on and along the rail line to complete preventative maintenance improvements and advance major railroad construction projects,” the NCTD said in a statement.

No passenger or freight trains, including Amtrak, will operate during the closure. Test trains, construction vehicles and equipment will be active.

Officials advised residents to remain alert near the tracks and only to cross the rail line at designated crossings.
