OAKLAND — A 79-year-old man was killed Wednesday night in a physical assault in West Oakland, authorities said.

His name was not released. Police said he was an Oakland resident but have not said if he lived in the area where he was killed.

He was found bleeding with major trauma to his body about 6:04 p.m. Wednesday outside in the 800 block of West Grand Avenue. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to initial police reports the man was assaulted by another person who fled before officers got to the scene. Police have not yet said what kind of weapon was used but said that it did not appear to be a gun.

A motive for the killing is under investigation. No suspect information has been released.

The killing is the 19th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 29 homicides in the city.
