“Rollicking” doesn’t quite go the distance, “boisterous” is big but not quite energetic enough, and “full of creative kapow” has flavor, but perhaps could use a whole lot more.

The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval, the free street festival that grandly unfurls each Oct. 31, is known around the world as one of the largest and liveliest outdoor Halloween extravaganzas.

And did we say “grandly” earlier?

We do mean “over-the-top-ly,” for the many of the eye-catching, eye-popping, I-wish-I-thought-of-that costumes sported at the ebullient event have been months in the making.

Hundreds of thousands of people attend the happening, which stretches for a mile through the heart of West Hollywood.

Santa Monica Boulevard is the center of the spirited, throng-packed action, with N. Doheny Drive and N. La Cienega Boulevard serving as the general bookends.

The city of West Hollywood has several emphatically shared tips and suggestions before you attend; “Kids and pets are strongly discouraged” is one, as well as a list of items that are not permitted. Read up here.

“First launched in 1987, West Hollywood’s celebration of Halloween is rooted in the City’s diverse culture and community,” shares the City of West Hollywood’s site.

“Year by year, what became known as the City’s Halloween Carnaval grew into an annual gathering of phenomenal costumes, entertainment, culture, and self-expression with a myriad of observers, revelers, exhibitionists, and performers with countless thousands of people in attendance each year.”

“People come from all over the region — and, in fact, the world — to take part in the fun!”

Costumes, community, and an exuberantly outlandish spirit make this event, which turns 40 in two short years, an iconic Halloween affair. Get information now on the 2025 West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval.
