SERIES HISTORY
While California holds a 50-36-1 all-time record against The Rock, SRU has firmly controlled the series of late with six consecutive wins over the Vulcans, including a four-set (25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 28-26) victory at Morrow Field House earlier in the year.

Slippery Rock’s victory over California earlier in the year was the definition of a true all-around team effort.

Offensively, four Rock athletes finished with double-digit kill production in Callie Chevalier (15), Lauren VonderHaar (14), Gwen McCarthy (12) and Emry Rumbaugh (11). The Rock’s quartet of double-digit kill providers combined for a .254 attack percentage. Marley Annis served a team-high two aces.

SRU’s stout front line featured VonderHaar going for 10 total blocks with Rumbaugh (4), McCarthy (3), Addison Jones (4) and Ava Haynes (3) all tallying multiple block assists as well. Libero Kara Pasquale compiled 23 digs for her eighth 20+ dig outing of 2025.

The Rock’s 59 kills in the win is a single-match high for the year while the 14 total blocks is the second-highest tally this year.

SERIES HISTORY
Slippery Rock has taken the last two matches against Seton Hill, and four of the last six overall in the series dating back to 2022, to trim the Griffins’ record versus SRU to 17-12. A Saturday victory would give The Rock their first season sweep of Seton Hill since the Griffins joined the PSAC.

The Rock’s four-set (25-23, 25-20, 12-25, 25-13) victory over Seton Hill at Morrow Field House earlier in the year was highlighted by a single-match season-best .219 attack percentage. Emry Rumbaugh had a match-high 14 kills (.353) in the win with Callie Chevalier close behind at 13 kills.

Defensively, Slippery Rock limited Seton Hill – which came into the match carrying a .220 attack percentage on the season – to a .167 showing thanks in no small part to 23 digs from Kara Pasquale and six total blocks by Lauren VonderHaar.

POSTSEASON HOPES NOTE DEAD YET

Entering the stretch run of the 2025 season, the Western Division postseason picture is slowly starting to come into focus.

• The top four teams in the PSAC West standings at the conclusion of the regular season qualify for the PSAC Tournament.

• With six matches remaining in the regular season, Slippery Rock finds itself situated in a tie for seventh place in the PSAC West standings with a 2-6 league record. While not mathematically eliminated, it’s imperative that SRU starts to put wins together for a realistic chance of snapping its 16-year PSAC Tournament drought.

• With an undefeated conference record of 8-0, Gannon is well on its way to locking up a PSAC Tournament. IUP has sole possession of second place in the divisional standings at 5-3 followed by a three-team tie for third place with the trio of Pitt-Johnstown, Clarion and Edinboro sporting matching 4-4 conference marks.

• Rounding out the standings is Seton Hill (3-5) in sixth place with The Rock and Vulcans locked in a tie for seventh (2-6).

VONDERHAAR TO BREAK BLOCKS RECORD

Middle hitter Lauren VonderHaar heads to California on the cusp of becoming Slippery Rock’s all-time leader for blocks in a career.

Entering Friday’s match, Vonderhaar has racked up 365 career blocks. She is three rejections away from tying Laurie Flynn’s (1991-94) current record and one away from snapping the milestone which has stood for 31 years.

2025 has turned into another career-year for VonderHaar, who has started all 21 matches on the way to compiling 159 kills on a .263 attack percentage along with 107 blocks (33 solo / 74 assisted), 55 digs and nine aces.

With at least six matches left in the season, VonderHaar has already set or matched her previous personal-bests in kills, aces and digs while being on pace to surpass her career-high in blocks.

VonderHaar’s 107 blocks this season are already the 10th-highest single-season total in program history.

TRICK OR TREAT

Friday’s match marks the 22nd time in program history that Slippery Rock has played on Halloween. SRU is 13-8 in the previous 21 Halloween bouts.

CHEVALIER RETURNS TO FORM

After a rare down week in which she totaled just nine kills with 10 attack errors in matches at IUP and Pitt-Johnstown, senior Callie Chevalier bounced back against Clarion with a 12-kill, 15-dig double-double. The Clarion match marked her 43rd career outing with 10 ore more kills as well as her 19th career double-double.

In 21 matches this season, Chevalier has paced SRU with 238 kills (2.87 per set / .140%) while also ranking second on the team in digs (221) and tied for third in blocks (40).

Chevalier is also on pace to close the year with 306 kills, which would make her only the second Rock athlete in the last nine years to top 300 kills in a single-season: Erica Selfridge also had back-to-back 300-kill years in 2023 and 2024.

BIG NIGHT ON THE SERVE

The Clarion match saw Slippery Rock serve nine aces – the team’s third-highest total this season. Kaitlyn Danszczak paced the pack with a career-high three aces. VonderHaar and Jaeden Yost added two aces apiece as well while Chevalier and Paityn Krause rounded out the group with one apiece.

EIGHT STRAIGHT FOR KRAUSE

With her ace against Clarion, Krause extended her streak of matches with at least one ace to eight. In doing so, she moved into to a four-athlete tie for sixth place in terms of consecutive matches with aces at SRU since 2008.

Yost holds the record for consecutive matches with an ace by a Rock athlete over the last 17 years: she served an ace in 13 consecutive matches between the end of the 2024 season and the start this year.

STARTING STRONG, BUT HAVE TO FINISH

• Slippery Rock has won the first set in 13 of its 21 matches – 61.9 percent of the time – this season. However, SRU is just 1-6 in matches that have gone five sets.

ROCK UP TO 23rd IN BLOCKS

SRU enters the weekend ranked 23rd in the nation in total blocks (194) and 27th in blocks per set (2.3). While VonderHaar leads the way in blocks, there are five other athletes with at least 25 blocks.

• The trio of Emry Rumbaugh (41), Addison Jones (40) and Chevalier (40) are all within one block of each other for second place while Victoria Nalbach has tallied 34 blocks followed by Ava Haynes with 27.

• Rounding out SRU’s block leaders are Danszczak (18), Gwen McCarthy (10) and Marley Annis (10).

VONDERHAAR, PASQUALE REMAIN AMONG D2’S BEST

VonderHaar and Pasquale head into the California match ranked among the nation’s best in blocks and digs, respectively.

• With 107 blocks (33 solo / 74 assisted / 1.29 per set), VonderHaar ranks 11th in the country in total rejections and 14th in blocks per set.

• Pasquale’s 378 total digs rank 43rd across all of Division II.

SUPPLEMENTAL OFFENSE

• Rumbaugh ranks third on The Rock in kills as the freshman has posted 139 over the first 20 matches of her collegiate career. In SRU’s home victories over Seton Hill and California earlier in the year, Rumbaugh had 25 kills on a stellar .288 attack percentage.

• Behind SRU’s 100+ kill trio of Chevalier, VonderHaar and Rumbaugh are five athletes with at least 55 kills in Marley Annis (93), McCarthy (78), Nalbach (64), Haynes (55) and Danszczak (55).

• Annis also ranks third on the team in aces with 21.

• Haynes is coming off a seven-block, three-block outing against Clarion. The seven kills were her second-highest match total of the year as was her three rejections.

RECORD BOOK UPDATE

Entering the California match, a trio of Slippery Rock’s seniors find themselves continuing to climb SRU career record book in several statistical categories.

• With 365 career blocks, VonderHaar is now four rejections away from becoming SRU’s sole leader in career blocks. The current record belongs to Laurie Flynn (1991-94 / 368).

• Already one of just eight athletes in program history to have recorded 2,000 career assists, Yost is now 44 assists shy of surpassing Haley Defibaugh (2014-17) for seventh on SRU’s career assists ledger.

• Additionally, Yost’s 137 career aces currently rank 10th all-time at The Rock – three away from tying Nikki St. Antoine (1993-96) for ninth place.

• With 882 kills to her name, Chevalier sits in 13th place all-time at SRU, 67 behind Leah Jones (2013-16) for 12th.

• Joining the seniors with her name already in The Rock’s record book is Krause, who ranks 17th in program history for assists in a career with 670.
