OAKLAND — Two police officers and a man were hospitalized early Friday after a traffic stop ended with the car trying to flee and at least one of the officers shooting the driver, police said.

It all happened about 3:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of 9th Avenue, near the intersection of International Boulevard.

According to police, officers made a traffic stop on a white car, and during the stop, the driver accelerated to get away. When the vehicle took off, it dragged one of the officers with it, police said.

A second officer trying to help became pinned against the car, police said. They added that at some point during that sequence, one of the officers was able to fire his gun.

The driver was wounded and hospitalized. Police said he was in stable condition at a hospital.

The two officers also went by ambulance to a hospital. Their status was not known immediately.

A massive police presence remained at the intersection past 7 a.m., and police closed International Avenue between 8th Avenue and 10th Avenue.

No other information was available immediately.
