Four Baltimore police officers who had been investigated in an alleged sex assault case in San Francisco will not be charged by local prosecutors, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
The officers, identified by the Baltimore Banner as Jai Etwaroo, Juan Rivas, Angel Villaronga and Jahmoor Acosta, had been suspended as of late last year due to the criminal investigation in California.
The Banner was first to report that the District Attorney’s Office had declined to file charges.
In a statement also sent to the Chronicle, prosecutors said the office will only file charges in cases they believe they can prove a crime was committed.
“In this case, there was insufficient evidence to meet our burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, so we are unable to charge this case,” the statement said. “Although the San Francisco Police had probable cause to submit an arrest warrant for review in this case, after careful review of all of the evidence gathered, we do not believe we can meet our higher burden of proof.”
The Banner reported last month that the investigation stemmed from an incident that occurred in September 2024, after a California woman and her friend went out for drinks with the four officers in San Francisco.
The woman told the news outlet that she blacked out after taking a shot of liquor, and that the following day she woke up next to one of the officers in a hotel room. The woman said she didn’t remember what had occurred, and that none of the officers would respond when she asked who had sex with her.
