A restaurant at Sacramento Executive Airport could remain closed for up to two years after major structural and environmental problems were discovered during planned renovations, according to the Sacramento County Department of Airports.
Airport officials shared an update Sunday on Aviators Restaurant, saying construction work began earlier this year as part of planned facility upgrades, including installation of a new kitchen floor.
During construction, crews discovered previously found hidden issues beneath the flooring, officials said.
According to the department, inspections found deteriorating flooring, water intrusion and structural damage inside the restaurant space.
Officials also said mold was found in multiple areas, along with asbestos connected to older flooring materials that must be fully remediated before the restaurant can reopen.
Further inspections found damaged concrete and deteriorating rebar beneath the kitchen floor, according to the department.
Engineering evaluations determined repairs will require the removal of damaged materials and the reconstruction of part of the foundation, including tying into at least 18 inches of uncompromised rebar.
Airport officials estimate the repairs could take up to two years to complete.
The department said it continues to work with the restaurant’s owner, identified as “Chik,” on a long-term solution. Officials also addressed rumors circulating on social media, saying both sides are cooperating.
“We all want the same thing – to have a restaurant that is safe and healthy for Chik, his staff, and his loyal and dedicated customers,” the airport said in its statement.
Sacramento Executive Airport is operated by the same county department that manages Sacramento International Airport.
