An Indian-origin 20-year-old man who was reported missing after his parents dropped him near San Jose State University on May 5 was found dead three days later, authorities said.
The San José Police Department said officers responded at about 1:14 p.m. May 8 to a death investigation of Arnav Singh in the 700 block of Phelan Avenue in San Jose.
“San Jose State University Police Officers and Santa Clara County Search and Rescue located a deceased body,” the department’s media relations unit told indica in an email.
Authorities said the San Jose Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue team and county search and rescue personnel recovered the body.
“The preliminary investigation revealed no obvious signs of injury or foul play,” the police department said.
Police have not released the cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed it is investigating the death.
“The Office of the Medical Examiner is confirming a death we responded to on May 8, 2026, and investigating,” the office said. “No other information is currently available.”
Authorities did not say how the man reached the area near Phelan Avenue, about 2 miles from San Jose State University.
According to Capt. Jermaine Thomas, a spokesperson for the university police department, the man was not a current San Jose State student.
University police previously said officers responded around 5:16 p.m. May 5 to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library at 150 E. San Fernando St. after meeting with the man’s parents. Authorities searched multiple areas throughout San Jose but were unable to locate him at the time.
