La Jolla Country Day, Mission Hills athletic directors departing as school year comes to an end

Four of the most respected high school athletic directors and administrators in the CIF San Diego Section are on the move.

• Jeff Hutzler, who spent 22 years as athletic director at La Jolla Country Day, is retiring at the end of the school year. He’s also the school’s winningest football coach, compiling a 101-37 record from 2002 to 2013 and winning six league championships and three CIF San Diego Section titles. He led the way as the Torreys transitioned from eight-man football to 11-man in 2005.

During his tenure at LJCD, the school won a combined 207 league and CIF championships. In 2009, Hutzler was honored as one of the State CIF’s 13 Model Coaches.

Robert Grasso, Hutzler’s longtime assistant at La Jolla Country Day, will take over much of the athletic director’s duties.

• Mission Hills athletic director Don Resultan is also leaving after more than two decades spent in education.

He was the first ASB director at Mission Hills, serving in that capacity from 2004 to 2015. He was vice principal at Granite Hills High from 2017 to 2023 and assistant principal at Valhalla High School from 2024 to 2025.

• Jeff Dufek is moving across town from San Marcos High School to Mission Hills, succeeding Resultan as athletic director. Dufek, who is also the baseball coach at San Marcos, will give up his coaching duties and serve only as the athletic director at Mission Hills. San Marcos has not yet named a successor to Dufek as baseball coach or athletic director.

• Damian Gonzalez is stepping down as the Titans’ athletic director and will return to teaching PE. In 13 seasons as the football coach at Poway and four at Army-Navy Academy, Gonzalez posted a 108-63-1 record, winning two San Diego Section championships. Poway hasn’t named Gonzalez’s successor.
