The Paraguay men’s national team has been assigned to practice at the San Jose State base camp during this summer’s World Cup, the Bay Area Host Committee announced Tuesday in a news release. Paraguay and Australia are the two teams stationed at Bay Area sites. Australia will train in Alameda at the Oakland Roots/Soul facility.
Paraguay is scheduled to play two group stage matches at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on June 22 (vs. Jordan) and June 25 (vs. Australia). The United States is also in Group D. Paraguay faces off against the U.S. on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
The group winner will return to Levi’s Stadium for a round of 32 match on July 1.
A formidable pot 3 team, Paraguay is currently No. 40 in the FIFA men’s world rankings. Seeds were assigned across four pots for the December draw, with the first featuring clubs with the highest rankings like France (No. 1), Spain (No. 2) and Argentina (No. 3), alongside the three host countries. Paraguay upset Argentina 2-1 in a November qualifying match.
The U.S. defeated Paraguay 2-1, with its star winger Christian Pulisic among several notable absences.
