Brown’s will be temporarily shutting down over the fall and summer semesters, with Wednesday being its final day of service.

Brown’s, which also hosts a Peet’s Coffee location, will be closed for the next six months for equipment overhaul and to “reimagine” the space, according to an email statement by campus spokespeople.

A new Berkeley dining option, called Gateway Café, has plans to open this summer in the new College of Computing, Data Science and Society building, called Gateway, on the Northside of campus.

“(Brown’s temporary closing is) definitely disappointing, especially for the incoming freshman,” said freshman Jaya Bhakta. “I know a lot of my friends are disappointed.”

In the fall 2025 semester, Brown’s was temporarily shut down for around a month due to staffing challenges. In fall 2024, Brown’s also faced a temporary closure due to a California Health and Safety Code violation caused by a lack of hot water.

Brown’s staff was notified of the closure a month ago, campus spokesperson Adam Ratliff said in an email. Some of the staff will be relocated to the new cafe.

Gateway Café, which will host 160 seats, will serve a Mediterranean menu with breakfast and lunch options ranging from avocado toast to gyro wraps. The exact opening date has yet to be set. This new dining option is “about a block away” from the current Brown’s location, according to Ratliff.

“We don’t really have Mediterranean influence on campus, so that sounds really interesting,” Bhakta said.

Brown’s currently boasts a “health-conscious” menu, according to the UC Berkeley Dining website, and it serves approximately 950 students every day.

Other campus dining options, such as The Eateries at Student Union and Local x Design, will also be closed from Thursday on for the summer semester.

The Golden Bear Café will offer Peet’s Coffee only and retail options through Friday before closing, and it will reopen June 22 for summer service. Café 3 will close for the summer semester after dinner Saturday, and Foothill and Clark Kerr dining will serve their final meals Sunday until they resume in the fall.

Crossroads will close along with Foothill and Clark Kerr Sunday night, but it will reopen May 24 for the summer semester.
