Mermaids are making waves in the Sacramento region this weekend as the California Mermaid Convention returns for a three-day celebration of all things under the sea.Organizers describe the event as the longest-running mermaid convention on the West Coast, bringing together performers, artists, families and fantasy fans for swimming, costuming, shopping and entertainment.The event is for all ages and features workshops, lectures, live entertainment, vendor shopping and themed gatherings throughout the weekend, highlighting a community of mermaids.The festivities begin Friday, with the free “Promenade of Mermaids” from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. along the Embarcadero Waterfront in Old Sacramento. Later that evening, attendees 21 and older can head to the Dive Bar in downtown Sacramento for the “By Sea and by Stars” aquatic fashion show and launch party. The event runs from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and has a $5 cover charge.The main convention takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hagan Park Community Pool.
