BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield City Council is expected to approve a new contract Wednesday outlining salary increases for Bakersfield police officers, over 10 months after the last contract expired, according to the meeting agenda.

The Bakersfield Police Officers Association represents police officers, senior police officers, administrative or training officers, detectives, police sergeants and other classifications that may be added to the Police Bargaining Unit in the future.

If approved, members of BPOA are set to see a 2% increase in their next paycheck and another 2% increase for the first full pay period after July 1, city officials said.

The memorandum of understanding would run from July 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2026.

The cost of the salary increases for the remainder of this fiscal year is estimated to be $253,333, according to city staff.

“City staff appreciates BPOA’s efforts to reach agreement in a challenging budget environment, particularly given rising base wages and hiring opportunities among comparator agencies,” staff said in the agenda.

All represented units — including members of the Bakersfield Professional Fire Association — would be under agreement if this resolution is approved.

BPOA’s last contract expired in June 2025. Bakersfield’s officers have been getting paid under the previous contract’s terms, city spokesperson Eric Galvan said.

At a Bakersfield City Council meeting in November, being about four months in without a contract, BPOA members demanded the city to offer a fair, competitive pay for the officers.

The City Council is set to consider the proposed MOU at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall at 1501 Truxtun Ave.
