MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS News) – One man was taken into custody Wednesday evening after allegedly firing multiple shots at an individual and striking a nearby home. The shooting is believed to have unfolded in a neighborhood across from Oakland High School, according to the Murfreesboro Police Department.
Police said the shooting was reported around 6:55 p.m. in the 2200 block of Patriot Drive, near Highway 96 East, also known as Lascassas Pike. Shortly after officers arrived on the scene, the Murfreesboro Police Department launched a drone to assist in locating the suspected gunman.
One resident in the area reported seeing the heavy police presence as he got home. The bystander told WGNS that he witnessed police searching a wooded area between Herring Crossing and Patriot Drive.
The local homeowner, who lives in the Rockbridge Cove neighborhood, told us that he arrived as officers were actively searching the area along Highway 96. Moments later, the resident said that he saw additional patrol vehicles pull onto Herring Crossing. Watching from the safety of his car, he told our reporter that the next thing he saw were police officers escorting a suspect in handcuffs to the back of a police cruiser.
Authorities believe the individual taken into custody is connected to the shooting on Patriot Drive, which is located directly across from Oakland High School and 1,600 feet away from the site where the bystander watched in silence.
Police confirmed no injuries were reported, though gunfire did strike and damage a residence in the area. As of Wednesday night, the investigation remained active and no additional details had been released.
