BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — As the summer months approach and the weather heats up, tourists and Kern County residents are heading down to the Kern River.

Officials are warning that danger isn’t always obvious on the river, the surface can seem calm but strong currents are surging underneath the water.

Kern County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lori Mesa joined ARC Bakersfield to urge the public to be aware of the conditions and take the necessary precautions around the Kern River.

Several local agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, are working together to educate visitors about the dangers of the Kern River.
