A fire at an affordable housing building in San Francisco’s Tenderloin displaced 46 people early Wednesday, according to fire officials.
The blaze broke out late Tuesday at 285 Turk St., a six-story apartment building owned by the San Francisco Community Land Trust. No injuries were reported, and the cause remained under investigation Thursday.
The fire started in a second-floor light well and spread upward toward the roof, prompting firefighters to call a second alarm, the fire department said.
The land trust said Thursday that the fire affected 40 households and two commercial tenants. The American Red Cross and San Francisco emergency response teams helped transport residents to temporary shelter overnight, the organization said.
“Our immediate priority is the safety, stability, and well-being of every resident affected by this fire,” the land trust said in a statement.
Staff members and property managers were still assessing the damage and working to find relocation options for residents who could not return home, the organization said.
The building is part of a long-running effort to preserve affordable housing in the Tenderloin, one of San Francisco’s densest neighborhoods and home to many low-income residents.
The San Francisco Community Land Trust acquired 285 Turk St. in 2022, preserving 40 units as affordable housing, according to the Partnership for the Bay’s Future.
The land trust said it was seeking temporary relocation leads, housing resources and donations for residents affected by the fire.
Fire officials had not publicly released a damage estimate as of Thursday.
