Small business owners, residents, and community leaders in Northeast L.A. are scheduled to gather on Saturday, May 16, 2 p.m., for a rally against business displacement. The event, organized by Save Northeast Los Angeles Shops, will focus on the challenges posed by surging rents and limited tenant protections for businesses. The gathering will be held at READ Books, 4972 Eagle Rock Blvd., whose owners are looking for a new space after being hit with a large rent hike.  Organizers are calling for rent protections, anti-displacement measures, and pledges from elected officials to support small businesses with action.

East Hollywood

Construction began Thursday on the Sierra Vista interim supportive housing community near the 101 Freeway, according to a statement from City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez. Scheduled to open in early 2027, the facility at 5301 Sierra Vista Ave. will have 51 private, non-congregate units for people without housing, including 10 beds for transitional-age youth. The City’s partners in the project include DignityMoves and Hope the Mission.

Silver Lake

A house that was originally built by evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson in 1941 is listed for sale at $6,775,000. The four-bedroom Monterey Colonial at 1982 Micheltorena St. sits on nearly three-quarters of an acre. No word in the real estate listing, though, on whether the house still has an entire stairway that leads nowhere. Redfin
