The Padres dropped two of three in Milwaukee to slip a half-game behind the Dodgers in the division. Wednesday’s lopsided loss dropped their run-differential to minus-3, 12th in the majors despite having the majors’ seventh-best record. The Padres swept the Mariners at Petco Park last month and is a win away from securing their first official Vedder Cup (they outscored Seattle 16-9 in the series, the first tiebreaker).
Seattle Mariners (22-23, 2nd in AL West)
The Mariners took three of four in Houston and have won six of their last 10 games to get back to within a game of the Athletics in the division. Seattle ranks eighth in run differential (plus-16), 14th in OPS (.708), 10th in starting pitching ERA (3.92) and second in bullpen ERA (3.08).

San Diego: The Padres’ .575 OPS in May is the worst in the majors, as are there 121 strikeouts in 13 games. Only one qualifying Padre has an OPS over .650—OF Jackson Merrill (.705)—while both 3B Manny Machado (.439) and OF Ramón Laureano (.413) are in severe slumps. RHP Bradgley Rodriguez leads the team with six appearances in May (1.42 ERA), while RHP Jason Adam has not allowed a run in any of his five appearances this month.
Seattle: OF Luke Raley and OF Julio Rodriguez both have five homers this month, with Raley posting a blistering 1.356 OPS in part-time duty (26 ABs). Rodriguez leads qualifiers with a .927 OPS this month, followed by Randy Arozarena (.901). C Cal Raleigh had a .184 OPS in nine games in May before hitting the injured list on Thursday. RHP Eduard Bazardo leads the team with seven appearances (4.26 ERA) in May, while RHP Nick Davila has not allowed a run in 5⅓ innings.

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (4-1, 3.05 ERA) | The Padres are 7-1 in his starts so far, but he hasn’t completed six innings in his last three appearances (5.17 ERA). Vásquez allowed four runs on five hits and four walks in four innings in his start this year against the Mariners, his shortest this season.
Mariners RHP Emerson Hancock (3-1, 3.21 ERA) | Five of his eight starts have been quality but he allowed five runs in six innings in his last start, a win, at the white Sox. Hancock limited the Padres to two runs on four hits and a walk in six innings at Petco Park last month. He struck out six.

Padres TBA | RHP Lucas Giolito last started for Double-A San Antonio on Sunday and would be on regular rest if the Padres slot him in here ahead of RHP Walker Buehler (2-2, 5.20 ERA). The 31-year-old Giolito had a 4.76 ERA in a four-start build-up in the minors, finishing with six innings of one-run ball (74 pitches) in which he struck out three without a walk.
Mariners RHP Logan Gilbert (2-3, 3.78 ERA) | He’s coming off six shutout innings of one-hit ball in which he struck out nine without a walk. It was just his third quality start in nine starts this season. Gilbert is 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA in five career starts against the Padres, the last in 2024 (7⅔ IP, 3 ER).
