CIF San Diego Section titles and CIF SoCal Regional qualifying spots were on the line Saturday for the Individual Badminton Championships at the Balboa Park Activity Center.

Four of the five championship matches featured top two seeds battling it out for section crowns.

Del Norte High School’s Pradyun Gowda made history, becoming the second male to win the triple crown.

After winning the boys’ doubles title two years ago and the singles crown last year, Gowda teamed up with Meghana Nishant to win the mixed doubles crown, taking down Scripps Ranch’s Andy Fung and Jessie Hsu, 21-11, 21-6.

“All the events, different people played different events, but to be able to win all three, it is a great experience,” Gowda said as Saturday marked the second time the duo was paired together in mixed doubles.

“Our rotation definitely got a lot better. We know who’s going to take what shot, because before we were always confused. Since then, we know who’s going to take that shot, and we can work that strategy”.

Del Norte earned another win as No. 6 Ethan Quan and Mihir Thaha pulled off the upset of top seed Dylan Yang and David Lu from Canyon Crest in boys doubles, winning 21-17, 11-21, 21-15. They took the final eight points of the third set.

“Mihir, Pradyun and Meghana have won finals before,” Nighthawks coach Michael Buxton said as Thaha and Nishant won last year’s mixed doubles crown. “It’s always something that they’ve been working for since they were very little, and with the energy that we use to create and sustain and grow and make the Del Norte badminton program strong and successful.”

Rancho Bernardo’s Justine Yong won her third straight girls singles title, defeating Patrick Abby Taing, 21-5, 21-4.

Yong scored 12 of the first 13 points in the opening set and 11 of the first 13 points of the second set.

Simultaneously, Yong’s brother, Atticus, defeated Mira Mesa’s Charles Du, 21-7, 21-8, to claim Rancho Bernardo’s first boys’ singles title in school history.

“During the intervals I saw (Atticus) play really well,” said Yong, who became the first three-time girls singles champion in the section. “We train a lot together, so it’s really nice (training) with him.”

In girls’ doubles, No. 2 Lanting Jiang and Peiran Liang defeated top seed Gaby Truong and Katie Le from Patrick Henry 21-17,  21-12, marking all five winners from the North County.

The Patriots duo went on a 7-0 run midway through the first set before taking the final four points of the third set.

The top five qualifiers across all five events from Saturday’s section championships advance to next weekend’s CIF SoCal Regionals at Arcadia High School.
