There were various objectives for high school athletes competing in the Saturday’s divisional track and field championships.

For state-leading runners like La Jolla’s Chiara Dailey and Mater Dei Catholic’s Jasir Fontenot, it’s an opportunity to have a quality run while at the same time, compete in multiple events with the possibility of helping contribute to a team title.

Dailey easily captured the Division 3 1,600-meter run at Canyon Hills High School, clocking a time of 4:47.44. That’s well off her section record and state-leading 4:39.31, but was three seconds faster than runner-up Ayanna Hickey of Bishop’s personal record 4:50.31.

The Stanford-bound Dailey came back to triple, winning the 800 in 2:16.40 and 3,200 in 10:15.01, a meet record.

Fontenot, who slipped to No. 2 in the state in the 110-meter high hurdles, qualified comfortably in Division 3 at 13.81 seconds, buying another week to heal an ankle injury.

But then there are athletes like San Dieguito Academy’s Dylan Yarbrough and Rancho Buena Vista’s Justian Richardson.

Yarbrough, the state leader at 17 feet, 1 inch, was hoping to grab the section record of 17-2 in the pole vault at the Division 2 championships at University City High School.  He cleared 16-6 and was over 17-3 on his second and third attempts but came down on top of the bar.

“I had three good tries — I’ll get the record next week,” Yarbrough said by phone.

And then there’s the Rancho Bernardo boys 4×100 relay team that used the Division 1 championships at Del Norte High School to lower their section-leading best by clocking a time of 41.51 seconds. The quartet of Silas Christensen, Brice Abawi, Miles De La Cruz and Callum Grandinetti easily qualified for next week’s section championships at Mt. Carmel High School.

Other divisional highlights:

Division 1

The boys’ and girls’ 100-meter dashes, both wind-aided, were eye-openers. Rancho Bernardo’s Abawi scorched a 10.40-second time and San Marcos sophomore Miyah Holmes posted an 11.72, the fastest time in the section this season and only 2/10ths of a second behind the state leader.  Abawi came back to clock a windy 21.08 in the 200.

Helix freshman Ava Parker cruised to the fastest girls’ 400 of the day by posting a time of 54.59 before coming back to ride a 4.2-mps wind to win the 200-meter dash in a section-seasonal best of 23.73.

Steele Canyon’s girls had no trouble moving on in the 4×100 relay after winning by more than a second in 46.46. The 4×400 relay team bettered its season best at 3:49.53.

Canyon Crest Academy’s Amaya Estes, No. 3 in the state in the long jump at 19-6 ½, came very close to bettering that mark when she hit 19-5 ¾ while surpassing 19-feet on three of her six attempts. Oceanside’s Malia Jones, the section triple jump leader, went 38-9 ½ with four jumps beyond 38 feet.

Del Norte’s Cam Yarbrough swept the 1600 (4:10.93) and 3200 (9:27.16).

As expected, Oceanside’s Jayden Gibbs easily advanced in the weight events, tossing the discus a comfortable 182-10 before winning the shot put at 57-3. Teammate Brooklyn Davis swept the girls’ weights at 40-3 and 125-3.

Scripps Ranch finished first in the boys’ 4×400 relay with a yearly section-best time of 3:17.19 — No. 10 in the state.

Division 2

Sometimes, the competition makes you work a little harder than you wanted.

In the girls’ 1,600, for example, eight runners eclipsed the 5-minute mark with Cathedral Catholic finishing 1-2 behind Grace Keefe’s personal-best 4:54.53 and a 4:55.04 by Liesel Sellerberg. Keefe doubled back to win the 3200 in 10:45.82.

On the boys’ side, Mt. Carmel junior Jaxon Northcutt easily earned his spot in next week’s 1600 at 4:13.89 and topped the 3200 at 9:04.50.

Santana junior Harper Diaz clocked her season-best 2:11.78 in the girls’ 800, while Mission Vista’s Cade Willhoit joined what is shaping up as a torrid boys metric half-mile by running 1:55.27.

Division 3

Although he leads the state in the 800-meter run with his section-record 1:49.54, Sage Creek’s Josiah Bowman cruised to victory first in the 1600 at 4:23.81 before easily moving on in his favorite event where he ran a comfortable 1:53.31.

Madison’s Elisha Harris cleared a personal season-best 6-6 in the boys’ high jump to edge co-section leader Darrien Scott of Palo Verde, who cleared the same height.

Holtville’s Isabel Garcia swept the hurdles, clocking a section-leading 42.34 in the 300s.
