OAKLAND — Three people died and five people were injured — including the suspected driver — when a sppeding car crashed into a crowd of people in East Oakland late Saturday, authorities said.
The wreck happened about 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of 85th Avenue and International Boulevard.
According to Oakland Fire spokesperson Michael Hunt, three people are confirmed dead. Two people were critically injured and another was seriously injured. The extent of the injuries to the other two weren’t known immediately, Hunt said.
One of the injured was the suspected driver of the car. Authorities said he is a juvenile and tried to walk or run away from the area but that citizens in the area detained him until police arrived.
According to authorities, the driver drove recklessly before hitting a parked car and then driving up on a sidewalk and running into a group of people outside a store.
The crash comes two weeks after seven people were injured in the Uptown district when police said a car slammed into them on a sidewalk. Among the injured on May 2 in the crash on the 1500 block of 18h Street was a 15-year-old girl.
No other details were available immediately.
