Three people are dead and several others injured after a driver plowed into pedestrians in Oakland Saturday night.
The vehicle struck both cars and pedestrians at about 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of International Boulevard and 85th Avenue, the Oakland Fire Department said on social media.
Five others were transported to local hospitals. where two were in critical condition, the department said. The driver was among those transported with minor injuries.
“He hit this blue car right here, and I guess he hit the gas and went even faster and went down the whole sidewalk and just sideswiped all those people. And he took off running,” said one witness. “I saw him hit this car, I seen him coming but there was nothing I could do he was going too fast.”
The juvenile driver of the car was arrested in connection with the incident, police said.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee issued a statement writing:
“Oakland is mourning the lives lost in last night’s tragic crash at International Boulevard and 85th Avenue in East Oakland. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, loved ones, and all of those impacted. Thank you to the Oakland Police Department, Oakland Fire Department, and our first responders.”
An investigation into what led up to the deadly crash is underway.
