BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield Police Department is set to conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint Saturday night within city limits.
The checkpoint is set to be held from 6:30 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday at an undisclosed area.
Police said crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by 20% when well-publicized checkpoints and saturation patrols are conducted.
During the checkpoint, officers will be looking for signs of impairment and proper licensing. When possible, a trained officer will evaluate motorists suspected of drug-impaired driving.
Police said drug-impaired driving includes many prescription drugs, marijuana, some over the counter medication and illegal narcotics.
DUI convictions can result in significant jail time, fines and other expenses that could top $10,000.
Anyone who suspects seeing an impaired driver on the road is asked to call 911.
