A man suspected of shooting a police officer on Saturday sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with police Sunday.
The standoff began about noon in the area of Bardell Avenue, just south of Vine Avenue, and ended just before 5 p.m.
Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto said the suspect took a patrol vehicle Saturday after firing at officers and drove to the location, where he was later found.
Casto said investigators believe 56-year-old Paul Rodriguez Cisneros fired at SWAT officers again Sunday, then shot himself in the head after officers breached the home where he was holed up.
Cisneros was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. His condition was unknown.
No officers returned fire Saturday or Sunday, Casto said.
The shooting began Saturday after a woman called police to report her husband was threatening to shoot her, authorities said.
Two officers responded and were met with gunfire, Casto said. Multiple rounds struck one officer, who was later released from the hospital.
Casto said the woman and her daughter are safe.
If Cisneros survives, he will be booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and domestic violence-related charges, police said.
