A 54-year-old man from Stevenson Ranch was struck and killed by a vehicle in Bakersfield on Thursday night, according to the Kern County coroner and the California Highway Patrol.
Sibichan Varghese, 54, of Stevenson Ranch, was identified as the person struck and killed in an auto collision in Bakersfield on Thursday, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
At around 8:20 p.m. Thursday, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were called to Snow Road, west of Hollow Brook Road, for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian and a pickup truck, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
Per reporting by Bakersfield Now, a preliminary investigation by CHP indicated that an 82-year-old man was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado in the No. 1 lane, heading westbound on Snow Road at around 40 miles per hour at the time of the collision.
For an unknown reason, Varghese entered the road outside of a marked crosswalk directly into the path of the Chevrolet, BakersfieldNow reported.
The pickup truck struck the pedestrian, causing injury. Varghese was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck stayed on scene and cooperated with law enforcement
Alcohol and/or drugs are not considered factors in the crash.
KHTS Radio reached out to CHP Bakersfield for comment, but has not received a response as of the publication of this article.
