The Kern County Fire Department said the Wood Fire near Keene has burned 287 acres.

Kern County firefighters were battling a vegetation fire near the Bena Landfill in Keene on May 18, 2026, with smoke reported in the area.
The fire, called the Wood Fire, was first reported at about 8:47 a.m.
Kern County Fire said crews were working the blaze off State Highway 58 and warned drivers and nearby residents to expect smoke.
The fire was estimated at 40 acres.
