San Jose police are investigating the death of an 8-year-old who was rushed to the hospital after suffering a medical emergency last week.
The San Jose Police Department responded to a home on Lancelot Lane in East San Jose at about 10 a.m. last Wednesday on reports of a child with an undisclosed medical emergency, the department said.
Police did not release any information about what injuries the child had, but on Sunday authorities were notified that the child died in the hospital.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is working with police to investigate the death, authorities said.
The home where the 8-year-old was found has been the subject of multiple child neglect investigations and welfare calls, according to The Mercury News. Police searched the home on Friday, according to KTVU.
The news outlet reported that six adults and seven children, ranging in age from 2 months to 16, lived in the home. Authorities have not officially identified the 8-year-old.
The Santa Clara County Department of Family and Child Services had visited the home but allowed the children to remain despite conditions which were described as “squalor,” according to the report.
The death is only the latest involving a child in the county. Last month, 10 county social workers were placed on leave following the death of 2-year-old Jaxon Juarez, who was placed in a home with a woman with a felony record and a teen now charged with killing the boy.
In 2023, 3-month-old Phoenix Castro died of a fentanyl overdose after she was sent home with her father, who allegedly abused drugs. In 2024, a 7-year-old was stabbed to death by his uncle after being placed with his grandmother.
Meanwhile, a report released in February uncovered three unreported deaths in 2021 of minors while they were under the Department of Family and Child Services’ care.
